(I02) Seeing the Light with Solar: Following a solar project from start to finish, identifying common pitfalls, and creating social impact

In the face of a changing climate, and as more jurisdictional and organizational decarbonization goals emerge, the demand for renewable energy solutions, including solar PV, only increases. Solar is the most popular source of renewable energy due to high generation potential, simple maintenance, technology advancements, asset value benefits, and decreasing costs. Solar will be an increasingly important intervention to meet green building codes and standards and to reach the highest possible green building levels. Despite the benefits, many solar deals are derailed due to hurdles, challenges or barriers that occur during the planning and implementation process. By understanding and acknowledging these challenges, we can help to reduce frustrations and increase the solar development pipeline. We can also enable the built environment to support both sustainability and social justice by incorporating solar into green building planning. This session will cover the development process of onsite solar from the perspective of private and public owners and consultants, including nonprofits. Panelists will share their experience on what makes a successful solar project and how to recognize common pitfalls such as regulatory, site-specific, and financial challenges. Attendees will learn how to identify a feasible solar opportunity and understand potential partnerships and incentives, such as those from the Inflation Reduction Act, for both onsite and community solar projects. The panel will address the key steps in completing a project by discussing the process from conceptual to operational. The moderator will guide the discussion with panelists to cover the key steps in the solar development process and the lessons they have learned through the development projects they have completed, and how green buildings incorporating solar can contribute to environmental justice. This presentation intends to show attendees that anyone can deploy a solar project successfully and avoid common roadblocks when given the right resources and tools.
