School buildings are community investments that are retained for decades. While some districts are able to replace older buildings with new, there are many opportunities to improve the energy efficiency and performance of the structure during the roof replacement process as well. Starting with defining key inputs to energy efficiency, including continuous air barriers and insulation, this session will use an interactive 3D model and project specific examples to evaluate the various roofing assembly options and interface details that can improve the energy performance of an educational building, for both new and existing buildings. Topics covered will include reflective roofing, roof coatings, and rooftop overburden, such as solar, green roofs and amenity spaces as well as how to design and build resilient, durable, and sustainable roofing solutions.
Learning Objectives:
Explain the key considerations when designing an energy efficient roof for educational settings, including their relevance to LEED v4.1 B&C and O&M.
Identify effects of reflectivity, overburden, and rooftop amenity space on learning and building energy performance.
Examine the impact continuous air barriers and insulation have on energy performance of a building, including shorter HVAC runtimes.
Recognize how both product and system selection impacts the sustainability, durability, and energy efficiency of an educational building roof.
