    The embodied carbon (whole life) impact of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems can account for up to 50% and may be more of the overall building's total carbon. Therefore, it is essential that the carbon contribution of these systems is understood and minimized during the planning, design, construction and operation phases of a new building.

    ASHRAE's Task Force for Building Decarbonization (TFBD) has recently completed a Whole Life Design Guide for Building Systems that focuses on defining the whole life carbon for MEP systems, with a focus on heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.

    The Design Guide provides an overview of whole life carbon, the use of environmental product declarations (EPD) and transitional TM 65 North America methodology in understanding product carbon contributions, and design approaches for minimizing the whole life carbon of MEP systems.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Understand the five main stages of a building's life and the associated carbon contributions.
    • Identify the MEP system carbon contributions to a building's whole life carbon impact.
    • Understand design opportunities to reduce the embodied and operational carbon of MEP systems.
    • Implement design process focused on optimizing HVAC systems with the building structure for minimum whole life building carbon impacts.
