Principal Architect and Educator of Biophilic Design, Vermont
Elizabeth Calabrese, AIA is a leading educator of biophilic design. Her professional and educational focus is promoting human and environmental health and wellbeing by connecting humans to nature and to each other in the built environment. As a principal architect for 28 years she has a multitude of projects to her credit in the northeast, on the west coast and in Kenya. Elizabeth believes that ecology and biophilia belong at the foundation and core of professional design and engineering programs and encourages a holistic, integrated, “eco-system” approach when incorporating biophilia into projects including those seeking Living Building Challenge and WELL Building certifications. In 2015, she coauthored "The Practice of Biophilic Design" with Dr. Stephen Kellert (1943- 2016) the pioneer of biophilic design. Since Dr. Kellert’s passing, she has continued to move the work forward with a focus on improving the lives of those most in need through architecture, teaching and consulting.
