Director, Global UCR
Wavin
A civil engineer by training, Friso Klapwijk describes himself as an “aquapreneur.”
As founder and innovator of the PolderRoof blue-green roof system offered by Orbia’s Building and Infrastructure business Wavin, a global water technology leader, Klapwijk is on a mission to create a more sustainable and climate-proof future.
Klapwijk received his engineering degree from Saxion University of Applied Sciences in his native Netherlands and held different positions in civil engineering before he cofounded the Amsterdam-based De Dakdokters, where he built the company focused on building, designing, and maintaining 1500+ roof gardens.
Intrigued by the potential to capture and reuse rainwater for green roofs, which would also mitigate urban flooding, Klapwijk launched MetroPolder to market his PolderRoof concept. Wavin acquired MetroPolder in 2022 and Klapwijk joined the Wavin team where he currently serves as Global Key Client Director - Urban Climate Resilience. He is frequently called on as an expert in nature-based, circular water design discussions by organizations such as the World Economic Forum.
Klapwijk is based in Amsterdam and works in Europe and the U.S.
