(F01) Designing and Building Resilient Waterfronts

The appeal of living, gathering, and working near water has been one of the most important and enduring phenomena of our time. Yet the challenges inherent in building in waterfront areas has never been more apparent, or acute. This panel will bring together leading professionals from the design, planning, engineering, construction and policy worlds, each bringing unique perspectives from their respective disciplines, on the challenges and solutions associated with climate change in waterfront areas, including:
- Major policy considerations and rating systems.
- Lessons learned from the design, planning and construction of projects such as the District Wharf in Washington DC, Bayfront, one of the largest mixed-income community development projects in the U.S; and Arverne by the Sea, a widely cited case study for resilient community development.
- Challenges in building and constructing resilient buildings and infrastructure in waterfront areas such as the new Coney Island Hospital and MSK David Koch Cancer Center in NYC and Commonwealth Pier in Boston, and others.
- Engineered solutions involving permanent and deployable flood barriers and natural and nature-based features.
- Flood resistant design practices for new construction and substantial renovations based on flood models and sea level rise predictions.
- Policy, permitting, entitlement, and building code requirements for addressing flood risks, future climate conditions.
- A Review of Rating systems with resilience focus including WEDG, LEED v4/4.1 BD+C, LEED Resilient Design Pilot Credits, SITES, and RELi
