    (IN01) Virginia Tech Innovation Campus: Maximizing sustainability from district scale planning to Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV)

    Technology’s impact on our built and natural environments can be seen and felt at all scales. From zoning and master planning to individual building design, the need for sustainable solutions in an ever-advancing digital age is of the greatest urgency.

    The Virginia Tech (VT) Innovation Campus Academic Building (ICAB) is the first building of a new campus for the university and is located in Northern Virginia (Alexandria) just south of the Amazon Headquarters2 development. Among VT’s goals for the project are:
    1. High-level sustainability
    2. Resilience
    3. Integration of technology
    4. An academic program slated to be the most diverse graduate tech program in the U.S.

    The building will be a model for sustainability implemented at all scales. The innovation campus and its selected site is part of a larger new mixed-use development informed by the overlay of a sustainability master plan developed by the City of Alexandria. The first Innovation Campus building, ICAB, will be all-eclectic with no fossil fuel use for mechanical systems. Building systems are designed to tie into future a Sewage Wastewater Energy Exchange (SWEE) system, as well as a geothermal field located below a city park. The building’s geometry was modeled using a generative design algorithm that led to a unique faceted form that maximizes photovoltaic (PV) energy generation utilizing PV on the building’s facades as well as rooftop. The building will be an icon that will showcase best practices district wide.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Upon completion, participants will better understand the role of city planners to encourage sustainable development through a district-wide environmental sustainability plan.
    • Upon completion, participants will understand how building electrification is a critical factor for building decarbonization.
    • Upon completion, participants will understand how mechanical systems can be designed to work with multiple heat source/sinks that can be brought online over time.
    • Upon completion, participants will become familiar with next-generation sustainable architectural design strategies including generative design and new photovoltaic technologies.
