Michael is the Chief Executive Officer of REALPAC, the senior Canadian trade association for large public, private and institutional investment real estate companies (1997 - ). REALPAC represents the Canadian investment real estate industry in government relations, public relations and standard setting, and notably on ESG issues, and carbon and energy reduction initiatives.After graduating with a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies (Urban Planning) from the University of Waterloo, Michael completed his Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of Western Ontario and engaged in a private practice law career spanning over 30 years, most recently as the Real Estate Practice Group Leader at the Toronto Law firm Aird & Berlis LLP. After completing an MBA at the Schulich School of Business and a PhD also in Urban Planning from the University of Waterloo, Michael started running REALPAC in 1997. Michael has led many standards and best practice initiatives throughout his career particularly on sustainability and ESG, including the first corporate social responsibility guidelines in North America for commercial real estate companies (2009), the first Green Lease in North America (2009), and the first target for energy use in commercial buildings (also 2009, with CaGBC), called “20 by 15”, with many refinements since. Internationally, Michael was part of a special small multi country global group of experts that developed the Construction and Real Estate Sector Supplement (CRESS) for the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)(2010-2013). Michael is an Adjunct Professor and former Executive in Residence at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Ted Rogers School of Management.
He is the former Treasurer of and a Board Member of the Canada Green Building Council, a former Board member of GRESB BV (the global benchmark for global real estate portfolios), and a former Board member (and former Treasurer of) the World Green Building Council.
